Can children bite off parts of the FaceFormer®?
Question
A speech therapist said that her client was able to bite off parts of the FaceFormer. Have you heard this complaint before? Could it be a manufacturing defect?
Answer
The FaceFormer is inserted in the vestibule, i.e. between the lips and front teeth. In this correct position, it is not possible to bite into the mouth shield. However, children sometimes insert the FaceFormer between their teeth, hold it firmly in place with a firm bite and pull hard on the lip wedge. It is certainly not easy, but with perseverance it may be possible to tear small pieces out of the mouth shield.
The FaceFormer is made of a high-quality silicone elastomer, a highly durable material for medical applications. But with bite forces of up to 80 kg, combined with strong tensile forces, even the best material is naturally damaged with many repetitions. However, the damage is caused by incorrect use. It is not a material defect. If used correctly, which the user must learn, no damage will occur and the FaceFormer will have a long service life.
Parents should make absolutely sure that the FaceFormer is used correctly by their children. Incorrect use can usually be clearly recognized by the bite marks. You will then find small, dented areas on the mouth shield or the lip wedge. However, the damage is always due to incorrect use and cannot be complained about.
