Beatmungs-Geräte, die unzähligen Menschen bei nächtlichen Atemaussetzern (Schlafapnoe) und anderen Atemwegserkrankungen helfen sollen, stehen seit einiger Zeit selbst im Zentrum einer Kontroverse. Weil mehrere Millionen fehlerhafte Geräte gefährliche Partikel in die Atemwege der Patienten abgeben können, sah sich der Hersteller zu einer beispiellosen Rückrufaktion gezwungen.
Die Geräte kommen bei verschiedenen Beatmungsformen wie nichtinvasive Beatmung (NIV), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) und BiLevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) Therapie. Nach Angaben der US-amerikanischen Arzneimittelbehöre FDA soll es zu zahlreichen Todesfällen im unmittelbaren Zusammenhang mit der Gerätebehandlung gekommen sein. Die Risiken der Beatmungstherapien sind offenbar weitaus höher als bisher angenommen.
