Es scheint plausibel, dass die Chirurgie die einzige Lösung für die Umstellung von Formen ist. Zum Beispiel von Ober- und Unterkiefer, die chirurgisch geteilt und neu zusammengefügt werden. Einem solchen Verständnis liegt allerdings ein rein „mechanischer Denkansatz“ zu Grunde, der für lebenden Organismen nicht ohne weiteres gültig ist. Andere Einflüsse spielen bei ihnen eine weitaus größere Rolle: Wachstum steht vorrangig im Einklang mit Funktionen. Entwickeln sich diese abweichend, verursachen sie als Folge negative Ausbildungen an Kiefer, Schädel oder Skelett. Solche Fehlfunktionen bleiben generell von der Chirurgie unbeeinflusst, sie werden nicht gleichzeitig “wegoperiert” und zerstören bei Verbleib nach und nach die chirurgisch erreichten Ergebnisse. Es ist daher wichtig, dass die Korrektur von Fehlfunktionen in jedem Fall vor einer geplanten Operationen steht. Oft passt sich dadurch das System bereits auf ganz natürliche Weise an und belastende chirurgische Maßnahmen können verworfen werden, was immer die sicherste Lösung ist. Wer sich bereits ohne Funktionskorrektur auf eine Kieferoperation eingelassen hat, muss Fehlfunktionen danach ebenso zu natürlichen Funktionen umstellen, weil sich sonst Fehl- und Rückbildungen des operierten Systems entwickeln. Chirurgische Eingriffe verbinden sich immer mit Risiken, Erfolgsgarantie wird ausgeschlossen und Operationsschäden sind selten wieder gut zu machen. Die Behandlung gestörter Grundfunktionen ist daher die grundlegende Voraussetzung dafür, dass sich die normale Form der Kiefer auf natürliche Art und Weise ausbildet.
